Don't Dress It, Be It

A commentary on middle America's blase approach to costuming

Is it me, or have grownup Halloween parties gotten simultaneously more elaborate?

The art of costuming, of adopting temporary personas for celebration, is among one of humanity's oldest traits. But Halloween costuming has been taken to an entirely new level. For some costume retailers, it seems as though Halloween is Fashion.

Take a look at many of the costumes available for consumers today. They are decently priced, higher quality and even come with hair pieces, netting, thigh highs or small accessories. There's no doubt you get what you pay for.

In addition, costumes for adults are more available now than ever. Retailers have picked up on the demand by adults for fun, upbeat, humorous and (sexy) costumes. Not only can an adult invest in a Halloween wardrobe from year to year, many find they are wearing real clothing and not some flimsy "thing."

The ever growing popularity of costume wearing among adults has made Halloween a very anticipated holiday. Bars and restaraunts have provided their younger crowds with drink specials, costume contests and performances by local bands. It's not what Halloween party, it's which Halloween party since there seem to be so many options for young people.

For all those grownup Halloween go-ers, remember this. Too often we wonder what others think and what they will say... But Halloween is that perfect time to let go and toast to ghoulish attitudes.

So maybe it's a little uncomfortable the next week in the office, but you didn't know your boss could drink like that...and woah, did she look good as a French Maid.
